My Journey...

Hello! My name is Neal Friesen. Earlier this year, I decided that on May 21, 2010, I would leave my position at Hesston College to begin a new chapter in my life. Since I will be essentially unemployed and homeless, it seems there is no better time than now to venture out on the vacation of a lifetime.

The journey ahead? Forty-eight states with a little bit of Canada, 10,000 miles, and six months. On a bicycle. When I tell people about this trip, I get varied responses, but two general themes emerge: “You’re going to have some stories to tell!” and “You’re out of your mind!” I want to see this country in a unique way, and this way I’ll have some time to reflect on where my life is going and what I should do next.

What does cycling have to do with Mennonite Disaster Service? Rather than just disappear on my bike for six months, I want to take this golden opportunity to make a positive impact on the world while I am doing something I love. I chose Mennonite Disaster Service and the Disaster Management Program at Hesston College as the causes for which I will ride.

My life’s journey began in the great state of Nebraska. After high school in Henderson, I spent three years at Kansas State University before transferring to Goshen College, Goshen, IN, to complete my undergraduate degree in Bible, Religion, and Philosophy. Following graduation, I arrived at Hesston College where I have spent three great years as a multi-tasking Resident Director at Hesston College, functioning as big brother, landlord, and an adult presence for resident students.

Now you have a chance to join me on my journey and to support Mennonite Disaster Service and the Disaster Management Program at Hesston College. To find out more, read about the programs. Then become a sponsor for cycle MDS. Your sponsorship can make a difference in the lives of those who have suffered from disaster and the lives of students wishing to do that same.
